Spiced Carob Hemp Brownie Bites: Baking with Gratitude


For the past two years, I have avoided making my birthday into a big deal.  And by "big deal," I mean creating a situation where others might feel obligated to do something for me above and beyond what they would do for me on any given day.   My birthday is another day I am blessed to breathe another breath, to live in this world, to smile, laugh, cry, and sing, and it is another day for me to marvel at the beauty of the souls around me.  Those that gave me life and raised me, those that have both challenged and/or nurtured me, those I can turn to when I need support, and even those I do not know but with whom I still feel honored to share this existence.  Which, to me, already makes it a "big deal."

Wings to Fly

People often refer to my birthday as "my day."  But on this day commemorating 35 years of my being here, it's not really about me at all.

It's about the people who bless my life, both past and present, who have helped me become the person I am today and inspire me towards the person I will be tomorrow.  Through observing them, I know beauty, through accepting their guidance, I know wisdom.  And through the love they entrusted to me, especially at times when I did not deserve it, I know faith.

So on this day, and every moment that may follow, I celebrate and honor them - in my words, my actions, my heart, and my soul.

Seeds That Grow


It still takes me off guard when someone tells me how much they enjoy my blog.  Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of The Canary Files and I hope that people will read it and that it will impact their lives for the better.  But it still surprises me when the evidence of what I've wished for is actually revealed to me.

Banana Bread Version 3.0:
Gluten-Free, Nut-Free & Vegan


I shared a banana bread-inspired recipe for peanut butter banana cupcakes nearly two years ago that discussed my history with banana bread.  It was the very first thing I ever attempted to bake:  numero uno.  And luckily for us, it turned out deliciously, and banana bread soon became a firm staple in my growing culinary repertoire.  Mind you, that was at a time when I was neither gluten-free nor vegan, so wheat, milk, and eggs were all involved.  Version 1.0.
